SEATTLE – A triumphant victory over Paraguay in its opening FIFA World Cup 2026 game created heightened expectations for the U.S. men's national team. Then as frontrunners, there were even more worries to consider, especially on Friday afternoon without the services of forward Christian Pulisic. 

But there was no need to worry.

The U.S. team, prepared by the Argentinian manager Mauricio Pochettino, rolled over Australia 2-0 in an eventful match at Seattle Stadium defined by dominant possession and strategic execution. 

Their performance gave fans, as the manager has called for, a reason to believe. 

Pochettino's team has now secured six points with wins over Paraguay and Austrialia in Group Stage play, and have qualified for the Round of 32.  

“All my conversations with the team over the past few weeks have been about what it means for us to be here, especially in terms of changing the team’s mindset,” he said on Thursday. “We have to let people and fans believe in us, that's the most important thing.”

The U.S. has earned a berth in the knock out round with one game remaining in the Group Stage against Turkey on June 25 in Los Angeles. 

The game's turning point occurred early in the 11th minute when an own goal by Callum Burgess inadvertently gave the United States an advantage.

The US is the first team in FIFA World Cup history to benefit from an own goal in two consecutive matches.

Despite U.S.'s assertive play with 62 percent ball possession and accumulating 516 accurate passes at an 86 percent completion rate, the real breakthrough arrived in the 43rd minute when Andrew Freeman skillfully netted the second goal, securing a two-goal buffer at halftime. 

The U.S.'s disciplined defense saw them only needing two saves throughout the match, with key figures like Antonee Robinson and Folarin Balogun receiving yellow cards amid a few late scuffles.

Meanwhile, Australia, while showing resilience, struggled to penetrate the solid U.S.'s formation, managing only five total shots against the robust American backline.

The Australian side made numerous substitutions, attempting to inject new energy as they faced persistent challenges in breaking USA's lines, with unsparing fouls leading to four yellow cards distributed amongst their ranks.

Notably, the Australians' efforts on the field were marked by a lower passing accuracy of 73 percent compared to their counterparts.

This pivotal early-game own goal and USA’s measured control of the match kept the Aussies at bay, propelling the U.S. to the top of Group H standings.
