5 AFRAM Essentials: What to Pack to Protect Your Glow and Enjoy the Day
Special to the Baltimore TimesAFRAM is not just another summer festival. It is a celebration of Black life, Black music, Black culture and Black joy. It is where families reconnect, friends link up, vendors shine, artists take the stage and Baltimore shows up in full color. From the outfits to the food to the music, AFRAM is an experience — and like any good experience, you need to come prepared.
Whether you are pulling up for the headliners, bringing the kids for a family day, supporting local vendors or just soaking in the energy, a few smart essentials can help you stay comfortable, cool and ready to enjoy every moment.
1. Bring a Blanket or Lawn Chair
AFRAM is an outdoor festival, and if you plan to stay for more than a quick walk-through, you will want somewhere to sit. A blanket or lawn chair gives you a home base where you can rest, eat, people-watch and enjoy the performances without standing all day.
For families, this is especially important. A blanket can become your group’s meeting spot, snack station and cool-down area. If you are bringing elders or small children, a chair can make the day much easier. Think of it as setting up your own little festival living room.
2. Protect Your Melanin with Sunscreen
Let’s say it clearly: Black people need sunscreen. Melanin is beautiful and powerful, but it does not make us immune to sun damage. A long day outside can still lead to sunburn, irritation, dark spots, uneven tone and long-term skin concerns.
Before heading to AFRAM, apply sunscreen and bring it with you so you can reapply throughout the day. Look for products that dry clear and are made with melanated skin in mind. Black-owned or Black-founded options include Black Girl Sunscreen, Unsun Cosmetics, Buttah Skin, Bolden and Kinlò.
This is not about fear of the sun. It is about protecting your glow while you enjoy it.
3. Stay Hydrated with Bottled Water
Between the summer heat, walking, dancing, standing in lines and moving through crowds, your body will need water. Bring bottled water and make hydration part of your festival plan.
Do not wait until you feel tired or lightheaded. Sip throughout the day, especially if you are bringing children or older family members. AFRAM is a marathon, not a sprint, and water helps you enjoy the whole day without running out of energy.
4. Pack a Hat, Shades or Hand Fan
Festival style matters, but comfort matters too. A hat, sunglasses or hand fan can help protect you from the sun while adding personality to your look. Bucket hats, wide-brim hats, statement shades and folding fans can all be part of the outfit and the survival kit.
This is also a great chance to support Black-owned vendors and makers. Look for handmade fans, headwraps, hats, jewelry and accessories that help you stay cool while celebrating the culture.
5. Wear Comfortable Shoes and Carry a Small Bag
AFRAM is not the day to suffer for fashion. Wear shoes you can walk, stand and dance in for hours. Supportive sneakers or comfortable sandals will help you enjoy the festival without sore feet slowing you down.
Pair that with a small bag or crossbody for your phone, charger, ID, cash, cards, lip balm and other basics. Keep it light, keep it simple and keep your hands free.
AFRAM is about showing up with joy, pride and community spirit. Pack smart, protect your melanin, drink your water and come ready to celebrate everything that makes Black Baltimore shine.
